A new attack on the infection

More than 50 thousand people die every year from bacterial infections that cannot be treated with antibiotics. The unique development of drugs based on natural viruses that can defeat any bacterial infection is carried out by the MicroMir Scientific and Production Center.

More than 50 thousand people die every year from bacterial infections that cannot be treated with antibiotics. The unique development of drugs based on natural viruses that can defeat any bacterial infection is carried out by the MicroMir Scientific and Production Center.

What is useful virus

Phage is a virus that kills bacteria. It was opened simultaneously in Russia and Great Britain at the end of the 19th century. Microbiologists noticed the property of microorganisms to attack the affected cell and already at the beginning of the 20th century tried to use these natural microagents in the treatment of infectious diseases and postoperative complications. But due to the lack of accurate technique, they acted more on intuition, because a microscopic living substrate could not be seen with the naked eye and even less so studied. Therefore, antibiotics, which began to gain strength, displaced this area in medicine. So much so that whole scientific schools have come into oblivion.

A group of scientists from Moscow not only preserved their scientific potential, but also gave the phage therapy direction a new life. The ability to isolate phages from the environment and to construct effective medical preparations from these natural substances has appeared thanks to the advent of electron microscopes and other modern technology. The unique collection created by scientists over the past two years has no analogues in Russia and abroad and is registered in the international organization WFCC (Canada).

This unique phage museum is not only replenished, but also constantly used to create new drugs. Original methods developed by the scientists of MicroMira allow isolating bacteriophages from the environment that destroy only pathogenic bacteria without affecting the beneficial microflora. This is their significant difference from antibiotics, which destroy normoflora.

“Not a single known antimicrobial drug has such a highly specific activity and the ability to reproduce,” says the biotechnologist of the company E. Zhilenkov. – Once in the affected cell, the bacteriophage destroys it, reproducing dozens of particles of its kind within 30-40 minutes. Having done their “work”, bacteriophages are excreted from the body. “This living substance works only if it has” food “- pathogenic microorganisms, so phage preparations cannot have an overdose and side effects.”

“Phagopreparations do not have toxicity, they do not inhibit the blood formation process, do not affect the cells of the body and do not suppress immunity, but rather maintain the natural balance of microflora,” adds Valentina Popova, Deputy Director General of Microcos World Scientific and Production Center. “Bacteriophages can be used in small doses and in short courses.”

Phages defeat Klebsiella

All these benefits of phage therapy became relevant when antibiotic efficacy began to decline. Because of the quick addiction, antibiotic-resistant strains appeared, against which these drugs are powerless. So, in the United States, pneumonia caused by the Klebsiella bacterium, which lives in the intestines and penetrates the lungs through the lymph flow, causing inflammation, has become a serious problem. In 100% of cases, such a patient is doomed, and only bacteriophages can save him. Such drugs have already been developed at MicroMir.

Valentina Popova explains that antibiotic-resistant strains often appear in a weakened body for which it is impossible to choose an antibiotic, and a person dies from sepsis. It will take only a few days to isolate phages that are effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of a particular patient.

So already today dentists of the North-West State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov are doing this. In the event of the development of a stable infection, they send the biomaterial to the MicroMir Scientific and Production Center. And after 2-3 days, dentists already receive new drugs based on bacteriophages for the treatment of patients.

Scientists are confident that phage therapy can resist any bacterial infection, but the interests of the medical and pharmaceutical businesses impede the development of this area. Pharmaceutical companies specializing in the production of antibiotics earn billions in profits. It becomes unprofitable production and testing of antibacterial drugs that do not work long. An even greater obstacle is the inertness of modern medicine, aimed at financing the treatment process itself, and not the result. American doctors admit that the world may come to the point where abrasion on the knee becomes deadly. Therefore, medicine will still turn to phagotherapy.
