Shellfish on the body

So in everyday life is called molluscum contagiosum – a viral infection characterized by a rash on the skin of dense, small nodules. Causes mollusks on the body of a virus from the group of smallpox viruses.

The virus is transmitted either sexually or through life, as well as through water, for example in the pool. It only affects people and cannot be tolerated by animals.

How do mollusks appear on the body?
The first symptoms of the mollusk appear in 2-3 weeks, and sometimes several months after infection. As a rule, rashes are localized on the buttocks, genitals, inner thighs, pubis, and lower abdomen. Hemispherical nodules appear on the skin with a depression in the middle of the same color as the skin, or slightly pinkish, or with a pearly shade ranging in size from 1 to 15 mm. They can be single or multiple. If the knot is pressed, a curd mass stands out from it. In this case, there are no sensations, sometimes itching is observed at the site of the lesion. Typically, mollusks on the body do not cause serious troubles and pass without treatment for an average of 6 months, however, sometimes they can be present on the skin for several years.

What contributes to the appearance of mollusks on the body
First of all, this is a weakened immunity. Often, molluscum contagiosum affects people with immunodeficiency conditions, allergies, as well as elderly patients. Children become infected with the mollusk when they visit the pool, as well as in kindergartens. Adults become infected by a sexual partner. It is easy to get infected in the bathhouse, sauna – the mollusk is transmitted through the surface contaminated with the virus. Contributes to infection and non-observance of personal hygiene – the use of common towels, washcloths, etc.

Are shellfish on the body dangerous
Molluscum contagiosum itself is not dangerous and does not cause serious consequences. Nevertheless, having noticed a characteristic rash in himself or the child, it is necessary to visit a doctor – a dermatologist or a dermatovenerologist. The fact is that other, much more dangerous diseases, such as, for example, syphilis or a skin tumor, can give similar symptoms. And only a specialist can determine this.

In addition, the appearance of mollusks on the body indicates that not everything is safe in the body and the immune system is weakened. And this may be the result of the presence of other infections. Therefore, when identifying a molluscum contagiosum, it is advisable to be examined for sexually transmitted diseases.

How is the diagnosis of mollusks on the body
It is usually not difficult to diagnose a mollusk – the diagnosis is made according to the clinical picture. If in doubt, microscopic examination of the contents of the nodules is carried out. If this is really a mollusk, then a large number of mollusk bodies are found in the mass of nodules.

When treatment for molluscum contagiosum is required
If the examination shows that the skin lesion is caused precisely by the mollusk, then, as a rule, treatment is not prescribed. It is believed that the body itself will cope with the virus in about six months. But sometimes, depending on the state of immunity or the severity of symptoms, the doctor may suggest one or another method of treatment. It:

curettage of nodules with a sharp spoon and then treatment of the affected area with iodine;
cauterization of nodules; use of antiviral ointments and immunomodulators.

If there are a lot of nodules (the so-called generalized form of the mollusk), antibiotics are prescribed.

If the family has a patient with molluscum contagiosum, then for the entire duration of treatment he should use only his things, hygiene items, and separate utensils. The patient should avoid contact – close physical and sexual – with other family members, not to visit the bathhouse or pool. So you can prevent infection of the rest of the household.

You must understand that getting rid of the virus is completely impossible – the molluscum contagiosum is a chronic disease. To avoid repeated manifestations of the disease, it is necessary first of all to strengthen the immune system, since it is precisely weakened immunity that contributes to the occurrence of relapse of the mollusk.
